I grew up in the natural gas industry and it is obvious that Bill Powers knows the industry very well.  Cold, Hungry and in the Dark, is packed full of excellent information and statistics on the true state of the industry.  It gives an honest analysis, backed up by the numbers, of what can be expected of the "shale revolution."  It is not a panacea of endless cheap energy at all.

Bill Powers' book is well worth reading for anyone who wants to know the reality of the current natural gas industry.

Bill Powers is an independent analyst and private investor.  He is the former editor of Powers Energy Investor, the Canadian Energy Viewpoint and US Energy Investor. He has published research on the oil and gas industry since 2002 and sits on the Board of Directors of Calgary-based Arsenal Energy. An active investor for over 25 years, Powers has devoted the last 15 years to studying and analyzing the energy sector.

Art Berman is a geological consultant with thirty-three years of experience in petroleum exploration and production. He is a Director of ASPO-USA (Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas USA) and sits on the editorial board and is a frequent contributor at The Oil Drum. Solid Critique of "100-Year Supply"; Weak Case for Shortage

Mr. Powers, as has been noted by other viewers, does an excellent job providing data and sources attacking the "100-year supply" myth. Throughout the book, Mr. Powers presented compelling evidence that the natural gas supply has been materially overstated by industry and other vested interests. The highlight of the book are the two sections in which Mr. Powers reviews US production data shale play by shale play - an analysis I have been unable to find anywhere else - and another section in which Mr. Powers shines a light on the holes in the Energy Information Agency's natural gas reserves data. These are among the strongest elements of the book, and I believe the pieces most appreciated by other readers.

That said, the other half of the book is spent on making the case that the U.S. will face a natural gas shortage. The case in this half of the book is weak and not as well supported as the other. After reading this portion of the book, I wasn't necessarily opposed to the idea that the US could face a shortage of natural gas, but I was far from convinced. Some of Mr. Powers arguments in this portion are lacking. For instance, Mr. Powers cites the decline in production in the majority of shale plays from 2010-to-date as evidence that the plays have already "peaked". While I don't necessarily disagree with his conclusion, the argument itself is wanting. My immediate reaction was to question if the producers that weren't forced to drill due to lease holdings and/or interest payments were shutting in wells and refraining from drilling in an attempt to hold out for higher natural gas prices. Mr. Powers never addresses this obvious question. A similar case arises when Mr. Powers conclusively indicates that U.S. demand for natural gas will increase because manufacturing is coming back to the U.S. Again, while I do not necessarily disagree with the assumption, there is never an incredibly strong and conclusive case. Several such quick assumptions are made to support the conclusion that the U.S. faces a gas shortage. While I'm not in disagreement with Mr. Powers, I'm far from convinced of his case.

I award the book four stars. The case against the EIA and the depth of the play-by-play production data are truly class-act and compelling. I knock a star off for the weak and sometimes wanting case for an imminent U.S. gas shortage.

The Reality of Shale Gas

Bill Powers offers a factual antidote to the incessant media message of US energy independence. His careful, three year, analysis of shale gas production (supported by over 600 footnotes and many charts and tables) brings to mind the detailed research of Michael Burry. Instead of poring over 100 page bond prospectuses, Power aims his magnifying glass on natural gas. In 2005 it was assumed that housing prices could never go down. Today, the same certainty is given to the continuation of low natural gas prices which will fuel a US manufacturing renaissance, power vehicles (Pickens Plan), provide electricity, and still have enough left over to export. Powers proves that these beliefs are myths, not facts. He starts by providing a history of the natural gas crisis in the 1970s and explains how coal and nuclear came to the rescue to finally reduce prices. He then explains why neither of those energy sources will help mitigate the price rise that he foresees. How can he be so sure that prices will rise? His detailed analysis reveals the terrible financing models of natural gas companies such as Chesapeake whose profits came more from land sales than production. In regard to the production increases from shale, Powers proves that drilling of a relatively small number of bountiful key "sweet spots" led to a rapid production increase followed by equally fast decreases. Against the backdrop of depleting and aging resources in the Gulf of Mexico, Texas, and other areas, Powers proves that shale gas is less of a miracle and more of another destructive bubble in the making. The strength of the book is the data which Powers provides to support his thesis. Where so many others offer their opinions regarding the current and future state of energy in America, Powers is a refreshing and factual voice. We would be smart to listen and follow his ideas for improving the efficiency of the energy grid, utilizing solar, wind, and other alternative energy resources. Michael Burry saw the future of housing many years before the collapse. Bill Powers sees a cold, hungry, and dark future unless we can tune out the siren song of energy independence and focus on the reality of natural gas production and prices in America. With massive debt and endless quantitative easing, we can't afford to ignore Powers' clear, factual, and vitally important message.

Lots of details on natural gas resources

I was looking forward to reading this book as I was looking for a clear rebuttal to claims of "100-year" supplies of natural gas in the US. Powers is clearly knowledgeable and the book contains many details concerning US shale gas plays including expected production rates. I was a bit disappointed with the writing style as the book takes the reader laboriously through each US state's production but doesn't seem to sum up results to support the conclusion. I felt like I was given a handful of bullets but no gun.

This stuff WORKS!

I purchased this book a couple of months ago and immediately put it to use in my 8th grade Language Arts classroom. The change in attitude for both my students and myself was AMAZING. Students who "pretended" to read before suddenly began actually reading "for real". As a result, their vocabularies improved, test scores went up, and some of them developed a passion for reading (and writing) which wasn't there before. Not only did my students begin enjoying books, I enjoyed teaching from these same books.
One important tip: Always, always, always read the books you assign your kids ahead of time. Read them not just for content for "the test", but find books that are funny and relevant to THEM.
I can't say enough about this book. Buy it, use it, and savor every magic moment when your kids finally enjoy reading!

Our school has a structured fifteen minutes per day where kids are supposed to read in different content areas each day. Every day it's a struggle to the point that some teachers just ignore the reading time. This book has excellent ideas to ensure the students really read and learn to read for pleasure and information.

Quick read, great tips

I really got a lot out of this book. The best parts are less about the logistics of doing various activities with kids and more about child psychology with regard to getting them engaged in outdoor activities. I tried a number of their tips over the summer hiking season, and it made a big difference in how much both myself and my kids enjoyed out hikes.

The logistical part is also helpful, and is broken into different sections for different sports, which made it easy to find what I was looking for.

Wonderful Book!!!

This is truly a wonderful book. It promotes an active and healthy lifestyle for kids to explore to the wonders of nature in all its forms. He reccomends wonderful activities that you can do with your children and addresses each one according to the child's age. I also coudn't get enough of the philosophy behind it. In this age right now children are experiencing Nature-Deficit Disorder. This is a very big epidemic that is affecting our children today. We need to unplug kids from the indoors (like tv, videogames, computers, etc.) and plug them outside!!! The benefits are endless! This book shows you how! And I love the author's sense of humor. Get this book. You will be making an active difference in your child's ( and yours) life. I hope he comes out with another similar book like this one!

He also meets Eve Moskelute, the beautiful widow of a celebrated French artist; Daniel Octave, a Canadian Jesuit who investigates miracles; and most surprisingly, Dawn Moskelute, Eve?s twin sister, who just may be a vampire.

Modern Classic Literature at Its Best

I am not a large fan of the vampire genre, nor am I a terribly big fan of Victorian-style fiction, so you and I both find it odd that I found myself reading _Daylight_. I have to say, this book was one of the most truely successful conversions of modern storytelling to classic literature style I have ever read. Knox expertly blends romantic European drama with easily identifiable modern life; characters 'Google' things, credit cards are taken advantage of and Jesuit priests consider HIV. Though the book gets off to a jerky start (rather like a slingshot, actually, it's slow and strained in the wind-up and a delightful shot in the release), the story itself is convoluted enough to be interesting, the characters are absolutely believable and the dialogue is brilliant. Even the strained subject of vampirism is dealt with in a scientific light and from the angle of a realist: what would a relationship with the undead be like? What if all vampires weren't actually 'evil'? What precisely is appealing about vampirism, and more importantly, isn't it a metaphor for most relationships? I really can't say enough good things about this clearly accomplished, very thoughful writer.

Complex Vampire Mystery

I detest vampire fiction and stopped reading "Interview with a Vampire" because I was so freaked out by the evilness of the characters. So why did I buy this book? The setting and the writing. My family has visited Menton, France, where much of the action takes place, and I love the entire region on both sides of the French/Italian border. I skimmed the book at the bookstore and immediately was hooked by Knox's prose. I also enjoy historical fiction and parts of this novel are set in the past. About two-thirds of the way through, I was getting uneasy about the possibility of a nun and saint being a vampire. Way too creepy. However, I persevered and was positively blown away by Knox's satisfying ending. I was worried that she would leave loose ends, but she didn't. All is revealed. I can't believe the reviewer who couldn't tell who was a vampire and who wasn't. This is no mystery by the end of the book. I still do not like vampire fiction; "Daylight" did include some pretty horrifying descriptions. However, the writing is so beautiful and characters so deftly drawn, that "Daylight" was worth the discomfort.

My only remaining question is: Why is this book out of print?

Wonderful book

I chose this book because I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of Vintner's Luck. While I an not a fan of vampire lit, I also loved this book because of Knox's feeling for and understanding of Mediterranean culture and I liked the sophistication of the characters who casually cross borders and change languages.

Excellent Resource for Coaches and Consultants

Living with Loss is an excellent book to help anyone going through grief of any kind. Rachel Kodanaz understands how grief can cause us to lose focus, feel natural emotions of loss, and most importantly how we can manage it. Now she has outdone herself with sharing her thoughts, philosophies, and ideas in this wonderful book. You can pick up the book at anytime and find a passage that is helpful, insightful, and practical. I recommend it to my clients who are experiencing loss and the feedback has been very good. This book makes a wonderful gift. It is uplifting, practical, and written in a very caring way. It's a must have for coaches and consultants who invariably will deal with clients who are experiencing grief in their lives.

My therapist recommended this book after my grandfather passed away. I continue to read several pages a day. Sometimes, the passage doesn't relate to the emotion I am feeling, but when it does, it grounds me.

I recommend this book for anyone who has lost a loved one.

Although it has been 25 years since I lost my husband “Living With Loss, One Day at a Time” still touched me greatly.
