Beyond the Solar System: Exploring Galaxies, Black Holes, Alien Planets, and More; A History with 21 Activities (For Kids series), by Mary

Tracing the evolution of humankind’s pursuit of astronomical knowledge, this resource looks deep into the furthest reaches of space. Children will follow along as the realization that the Earth is not at the center of the universe leads all the way up to recent telescopic proof of planets orbiting stars outside the solar system. In addition to its engaging history, this book contains 21 hands-on projects to further explore the subjects discussed. Readers will build a three-dimensional representation of the constellation Orion, see how the universe expands using an inflating balloon, and construct a reflecting telescope out of a makeup mirror and a magnifying glass. It also includes small biographies of famous astronomers, a time line of major scientific discoveries, a glossary of technical terms, and dozens of full-color images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8–Beginning with a two-page time line spanning prehistory to 2009, this chronological survey of astronomy covers early observations and discoveries, concentrating on modern findings. Beautiful color photographs of space engage readers from the first page. Drawings and diagrams expand upon theories, and illustrations of Galileo, Newton, and William and Caroline Herschel put faces on these prominent scientists. Activities relevant to each chapter, are sprinkled throughout the book, such as making an astrolabe from string; creating a three-dimensional starscape to demonstrate the distances between the stars in a constellation; inflating a balloon covered with stickers representing stars to measure the changing distances in an expanding universe, and more. The three-page glossary provides short definitions of terms (e.g., “eclipse,” “dark matter,” etc.), and many of these terms are listed in the five-page index and take readers to specifics. For example, the observations and photographs of the 1919 total eclipse of the sun revealed the bending of light around the dark sun, thus validating Einstein's theory of relativity. The resources section lists astronomy websites, sky watching and star-chart sites, and books for further reading. This inviting and informative comprehensive survey will be useful for homework assignments and may send young scientists to further studies of astronomy.–Frances E. From Booklist
*Starred Review* With a vast subject and a lengthy time line, this book takes readers on a fast-paced but worthwhile tour of the history of astronomy, beginning with ancient stargazers and ending with the James Webb space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2018. Rather than skimming through centuries of discoveries, the discussion slows at times to consider certain pivotal ones in some detail. At these points, Carson shows unusual finesse in communicating the methods and significance of scientific breakthroughs. Whether describing how Galileo’s observations of Venus through a telescope proved the heliocentric model of the solar system or how Eddington’s photos of a star during a solar eclipse substantiated Einstein’s theory of relativity, the explanations are remarkably clear, vivid, and concise. The discussion gives full weight to women in the field, including Caroline Herschel, Annie Jump Cannon, and Jocelyn Bell Burnell. The many illustrations (most in color) include portraits and photos of astronomers and their equipment as well as images of stars and other space objects. Line drawings illustrate the 21 activities, which offer students opportunities to explore concepts in concrete ways. Notable for its unusually cogent explanations of complex topics, this volume is a worthy companion to Carson’s excellent Exploring the Solar System (2006). Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

“A comprehensive combination of astronomical history and science, with activities that should encourage curiosity and involvement.”  —Publishers Weekly

"This volume is a great reference tool for astronomy lovers. The combination of history with hands–on activities is a novel approach that would certainly entertain and engage middle school students and beyond. The photos on the glossy pages are eye-catching and the diagrams come with great explanations . . . this volume would make a great resource for a school library or the library of a budding astronomer."  —National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Recommends

Challenging For Younger Readers
By Pop Bop
The author, Mary Kay Carson, has a number of successful books in her "For Kids" series. One very engaging volume is The Wright Brothers for Kids: How They Invented the Airplane, 21 Activities Exploring the Science and History of Flight (For Kids series). Another, which has some content in common with this new volume, is Exploring the Solar System: A History with 22 Activities (For Kids series). Both of those books are described as aimed at 9 year olds, or fourth graders. While the content can be challenging, that seems about right, especially given the subjects, (airplanes, planets), and the types of activities proposed, (build a kite or glider, map out planet orbits).

"Beyond the Solar System" seems to me to be on a slightly different plane. We start with prehistoric views of the cosmos, move through the early Greeks, and then bring astronomy all the way up to the present with discussions of dark matter, dark energy, mapping of cosmic background microwave radiation, and the like. This is a huge undertaking, and in the effort to provide both breadth and depth the book vacillates between being overly simplified in some parts and fairly technical elsewhere. (For example, the second activity consists of using paper plates to construct a demonstration of Ptolemy's system of epicycles within deferents, which Ptolemy used to explain why the Earth was the center of the universe. This established the basis for Ptolemy's incorrect explanation for why Mars moves in retrograde. I could be wrong, but that seems a little beyond what most 9 year olds would want to make.) In that same impulse of inclusiveness, there is so much historical background that we are actually more than one-third of the way through the book before we even get to the 1900's.

This is fine by me. The writing is generally clear, the sidebars are interesting and well chosen. Biographical sketches of major contributors to the field touch on not only the usual suspects, (Einstein, Hubble, and so on), but also lesser know yet equally fascinating players. Discovery timelines are also interesting, and illustrations of difficult points are generally well done.

I guess the point is that this is not your usual Golden Book version of galaxies and black holes. This is a book with substantial and sometimes demanding content. For a kid with some background and demonstrated interest this could be a great choice. For a younger reader for whom you want an interesting introduction to astronomy, this might be daunting or even discouraging. This really doesn't strike me as a one-size-fits-all type of book, and you might just want to be aware of that.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

LOVE!
By Mrs Mommy Booknerd (Mrs Mommy Booknerd's Book Reviews) #MMBBR
My 6 year old was beyond excited to get this book! He loves space and experiments and this book has given us hours of endless fun! This book is jam packed with great facts pictures and experiments. This will be a book that stays with my kids for years to come! This book is geared for 9 and up, as some experiments are harder to do, but my kids (age 5 and 6) loved doing the Sweet, Twisted Space-Time experiment. If you have a child that loves space or scientist in the house this book is a must have. I rate it 4 stars!
