From Library Journal
This encyclopedia is about as fair as one can expect about a subject that many people think doesn't exist. The author ( Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience , LJ 8/91) has tried to read much of the skeptical literature and at least to report what it says. Yes, the believers get much more coverage, but there is an attempt to present both sides. The accuracy of the book is also fairly high. A number of errors do occur, which, surprisingly, seem not to have been copied from other sources but to have resulted from misremembering. These small errors do not significantly affect the utility of the book. A useful addition to the reference collection of any academic or public library.

From Booklist
The tone of this volume is set in the foreword, where Tony Taylor, of the American Ghost Society, announces that proof of ghosts can consist solely of accumulated testimonies: “Scientific debunking be damned—we have just historically proven that a house is haunted and that ghosts do exist!” Guiley in her introduction says, “Can I prove ghosts exist? No. But skeptics cannot disprove ghosts either.” This is a book by believers for believers, and when this is understood, the work can be useful. The book is in dictionary format, with good use of white space and illustrations. The quality of the photographs is not good, but quality reproduction of old photographs is neither easy nor cheap. More than 600 entries (up from more than 500 in the second edition, published in 2000) range from a few paragraphs to a couple of pages, and although there is no bibliography, each article indicates further reading. There are extensive see and see also references and a detailed index. Unlike some of Guiley’s other works, this one indexes some hoaxes, including the Cottingley fairies, which deceived and embarrassed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; but there is no separate article on fraud. The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal has a brief, dismissive entry.  Believers and skeptics alike seeking information on various phenomena will find this book useful, and there are some fascinating biographies of individuals ranging from Harry Houdini to various mediums. Academic and public libraries with folklore and popular culture collections will want to consider this, as will larger public libraries with demand for materials on the supernatural. --Kathleen Stipek

The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits
By Amy Lynn
I own the hardcover edition of this book. It has cool artwork on the front and contains almost every haunting documented and everything pertaining to ghosts and spirits. They have everything from the afterlife to zombies. A great resource and has tons of information. Its been a year since i got this and im still finding interesting facts and whenever i hear about a haunting or somthing else i just pick it up and look in the book and there is the story about the case or subject im looking for and i can read all about it. Very compehensive and interesting book, great for people interested or curious in the paranormal or someone who just likes to read stories about ghosts and hauntings. Recomended.

Entirely too credulous
By Amazon Customer
It was intially refreshing to see that this author paid some heed to the findings of skepticism, but as I became more familiar with the volume, I found numerous cases where she had failed to make simple cross-checks of non-parapsychological historic resources that would undermine the tales her main sources told. (The Alcatraz article, for example, contains numerous erroneous claims about the Rock.)
Her research into the claims of various spiritualists is often incomplete: she claims, for example, that D.D. Home was never found to be cheating even though contemporary stage magicians often reproduced his effects. She also says that Home levitated in the presence of eyewitnesses, neglecting to mention that these witnesses were blindfolded or sitting in darkened rooms.
I do find Guiley useful for her recounting of various other ghost legends (the section on the Bell Witch, for example, contains three complete legends about the haunting). But it falls short of a great reference work. Any good reference on ghosts and spirits needs more biographical information about those who have debunked spirits, more counter-checking of facts, and more willingness to disappoint the ghost groupies. Despite her efforts to appear more balanced, it is obvious that Guiley writes for the money and doesn't dare to challenge what has become, in publishing, a major source of revenue.

Better than country music
By Ashtar Command
I found this dark, damp and occult work in an old fashioned and boring reference library in Stockholm earlier today, tucked away in between so-called scholarly works on mythology and American folklore (including country & western music). “The Encylopedia of Ghosts and Spirits” is authored by Rosemary Ellen Guiley, who describes herself as a spiritual seeker and researcher into the paranormal. In other words, this book is written from something resembling a “true believer” perspective.

Here are some short samples from the first chapter (the letter A), to give you the flavor of the work:
Acheri – In Hindu folklore, the ghost of a little girl which brings sickness.

Adelphi Theatre – London theater said to be haunted by the ghost of William Terriss, a popular Victorian actor who was murdered there by a jealous rival.

Afrit – In Arabian mythology, a terrible and dangerous demon, the spirit of a murdered man who seeks to avenge his death.

Alcatraz – Yes, the Rock is said to be haunted by sounds that seem to be connected to inmates and violence of the past. The author also claims that Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly played in the same prison band!

Amherst Haunting – A classic 19th century poltergeist case in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was so nasty that the spirit (named “Bob”) even tormented the family cat. Hmmm, so this is where David Lynch got his idea from…

Ankou – A figure from Breton folklore, who drives a spectral cart and takes away people who are going to die. I've known about this superstition since I was a kid, since the ankou is featured in a Franco-Belgian comic album. Besides, the similarity to Death in a certain Bergman film is über-obvious…

There is also an entry on the Amityville Horror, but seriously, who gives a damn?

If the above is something you always wanted to know more about, why, “Encylopedia of Ghosts and Spirits” might be just what you need. If not, I suppose you could always read a scholarly reference volume on American country music. Which makes me wonder. Did Machine Gun Kelly ever play bluegrass?
