It's OK - really short compositions, but they are growing on me

I had wanted a Duke Ellington piano solo book for a long time. And the unfortunate part about buying jazz books is that they aren't available in local stores. There's no way to look inside of the book online, so I basically have to guess which ones are good.

So I guess you see where I'm going - I am not completely happy with it. All of the songs are 1 or 2 pages. After the basic composition, there is no improvisation on the melody. Plus, a lot of the songs are labeled "Boogie-Woogie", which is not my favorite style.

The plus side is that I did learn a cool trick. Now that I know that I don't like really short songs, I can use what is available on Amazon - page count and song count. Doing the math, this book has songs that are an average of 1.7 pages. A different book that I have enjoyed has 5.25 pages per song. So before buying a book, I can check that out.

The other good thing is that the songs have grown on me. The arrangements are by Duke Ellington himself, and not someone arranging his orchestra songs for piano solo. So I like playing what the genius himself arranged. Out of the book, there are a few gems.

Extremely poor "Boogie" arrangements

I wonder if Duke Ellington is turning in his grave over this terrible arrangements of his remarkable music ....
I tried "Don't Get around much anymore" and found the Harmonies and "Boogie" arrangements very badly constructed and poorly matched ...
Don't waste your money on this book !

I absolutely love Martha Mier! Unfortunately this was not what I was looking for. My daughter is a first year piano student and she would be able to play these. Martha's a genius so the songs are fun to play anyway, but not very challenging.

About the Author
Julie Ngwabi was born in Zimbabwe, Africa, the firstborn in a family of five children. Julie’s father died when she was eleven years old, leaving Julie and her siblings growing up in poverty. The family was even homeless at one point. Julie assumed responsibility at an early age, looking after her siblings while her mother worked hard trying to provide for them. In 1993 Julie received Christ as Lord and Savior and pursued a deeper relationship and knowledge of God. In 2007 during a prayer service, the Lord laid it onto her heart to write this book.

Pleasantly Surprised

So, at first I thought I was going to have major issues with the main character, Mara. She seemed so horrid, but, it was just a clever trick the author used to draw me in to the story! Through Mara, I was able to see God working in her to change her character as the story progressed. Which means that by the time both Mara and Clay realize they liked one another I was totally rooting for her! This story is sweet with just the right touch of humor and seriousness. The characters are believable and there is not an excessive amount of sappy romance. If you are looking for an easy read that involves God at the center of the relationship then you will not be disappointed with "Bittersweet Bride"!

This was one of the best inspirational romance novels I have read in ages. I love the fact that this book was a whole lot more than I originally anticipated. I couldn't put the book down. The storyline was full and very interesting. LOVED it!
