About the Author
Senior Electrical Engineer who has worked for the past twenty years in the field of embedded control systems. He previously worked on Global Positioning Systems and secure communications equipment at Rockwell International, on document processing equipment at Banctec, and on medical electronics at Organon-Teknika. He has written several books and many articles for periodicals such as Circuit Cellar INK, and Modern Electronics.

Practical information but opinionated.

This book describes some practical debugging techniques. The reading is not very heavy. My biggest complaint is that the author appears to carry a big chip on his shoulder regarding the relationship between engineering and marketing, sales, and management. Unfortunately, this detracts from what would otherwise be a good book. Some of the comments made against management and marketing indicate quite a bit of resentment that has built up over the years. This book should not have been the vehicle to express it.

Learning to debug in the Real World

One thing I really like about this book is that the author includes many of his experiences debugging problems in the real world. Only a few textbooks contain these interesting and informative vignettes, but I think they are incredibly helpful in driving a point home. (They also make a textbook a lot more interesting!)

He emphasizes a few gems that we're are guilty of at one time or another...."don't ignore symptoms!" Sometimes those symptoms seem to have NOTHING to do with the problem at hand! He includes several sources of error with examples that are often overlooked - things as obvious as boundary conditions and timing errors. While it is easy for an instructor or colleague to say, "did you check the boundary conditions?," really understanding all the permutations of functional testing is often overlooked.

Some of the specific information is a little dated, but that doesn't invalidate the usefulness of many debugging techniques that transcend advances in the technology itself.

A black art

Having being inolved in debugging embedded systems from a hardware and software perspective for a number of years, I found it amusing that someone else out there shared my sentiments.
Mr. Ball has a good logical approach to fault finding and these techniques can be learnt saving years of 'doing it the hard way'.
As for Mr. Ball's attitude towards marketing\management, well I found it amusing and unless you are very lucky, always present to some extent in the workplace.
I would strongly recommend buying this book as hardware and software are so closely related in an embedded system that coverage of both disciplines in extremely valuable.
Learning about the stunts that Management can pull is generally not covered outside of a Dilbert strip.

The book is well written and pleasant to read and includes about 450 references and a good index... Readers interested in the early history of numerical forecasting will find it a useful summary.

There is an extensive set of notes that accompanies the chapters, references, and an extremely 'friendly index that unerringly points the reader to the correct page by subject and/or person. I was unable to find any typographical errors. I also compared quotations in the text with source material and found the author to be absolutely accurate in working and location. This accuracy and attention to detail breeds confidence in the material presented.
Tracking quantitative meterology over the 100-year span (1850-1950) is admirably accomplished by Nebeker.
I was especially pleased with his discussion of the early work in predictability that generously quotes from the research papers of George Platzman and Philip Thompson....Via the avenue of stimulation and through an abundance of historically accurate accounts, Nebeker has added an important contribution to the recent history of meterology.

enjoyable for all ages

I took up piano when I was twelve, and this was one of the books we worked out of. I'm guessing I had taken lessons for a year or two before starting this book. I loved it! My son, then seven, started working on this, and his friend's parent wanted the same book for his friend, who is maybe eleven years old.

The songs (originals by Lynn Freeman Olsen) are fun to listen to, fun to play, and impressive sounding. Highly recommended!

Fun melody's for the intermediate student!

While browsing a used book store over the weekend, I came across this handy book. It stood out among the other piano practice books to me because of it's quirky cover art. I have started to take up synthesizer again and this book has come in handy for practicing sight reading and melody practice. Many of the book's melody's are light-hearted and cute. Some of my favorites from this book include: "City Lights", "Halloween Bounce", and "Summer Mood". If you haven't played in months (or years) and would like to take up piano/keyboard/synthesizer once again, this is a good book for intermediate students. The songs are cute and charming without sounding too childish, I consider this book money well spent.

A good introduction to the philosophers covered

This book is written for young adults and covers "contemporary" philosophy from Bentham and Mill to Sartre and Camus. The author begins with Bentham and explains how the industrial revolution began turning philosophical interests away from metaphysics and epistemology to more mundane concerns such as the happiness of individuals, which was the concern of the utilitarians' philosophical enterprise. After the utilitarians the author covers Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, specifically their intense focus on the individual; the Pragmatists James and Dewey, describing their similarities and differences; Process Philosophy, covering Bergson and Whitehead; Analytic Philosophy; Phenomenology (Husserl and Heidegger); and, finally Existentialism, including the thought of Sarte, de Beauvoir and Camus. For each philosopher author Price provides a brief biographical sketch as well as some description of the contemporary culture or pressing social issues. She does an excellent job of covering the main topics. (This is not her fault, but I have yet to find a writer who can explain Heidegger.) I am not so sure that the reading level is at times appropriate for the intended audience, perhaps only for more gifted high school upper classmen. In any event, this is a very good introduction to the most influential philosophies and philosophers of the modern period,

Adequate for high school students with no background in the subject, though the author presents things a bit clumsily and makes inaccurate statements and generalizations at times.... In particular, the author's treatment of Kierkegaard was substandard and even misleading. Overall, it's a "reader's digest" summary of the history of philosophy, suitable for a brief overview of the subject....

Dazzling Moody Visuals

I like Turner's moody visuals. I bought this Kindle book to see his paintings on my new Kindle Fire. The paintings (and some other Impressionists like van Gogh, Manet, etc.) really show the Kindle Fire's color capabilities. A real visual feast. Also, it's nice to just rest, look at a beautiful -- vividly rendered picture -- and look some more. The picture isn't animated, it's just ... still, quiet and stunning. Definitely worth a few dollars to have these masterpieces on my Kindle Fire -- the pictures are on fire too!
