Im Frühjahr 1983 starb Martin Merz. 33jährig. Wer geht, bleibt in Bildern, heißt die Schlußzeile eines seiner Gedichte. Sie gilt jetzt für ihn."

I have just finished this book at just after 2am. I just couldn't put it down and wait till tomorrow to finish it.
This is a good, clean Christian historical story, that has good triumphing over evil, and people's lives being transformed by the love of God. My favourite sort of book! I'll be looking out for more books by this author.

She thought she'd never marry and he thought he'd never marry, but God had a plan.

Megan finds a stranger near her house in a blinding blizzard as she waited with her younger sister for her parents and brother to come home from town. She nursed the stranger, Jesse, while he battled pneumonia. When four people from town arrive to inform Megan of her tragic loss, they also insist she must marry the unscrupulous banker who would forgive her father's debt to the bank. Megan refuses. They try to coerce her, but Jesse offers to marry her instead. Now Megan is grieving her loss, married to a stranger, raising her sister, shunned by her churched by being falsely accused and gossiped about, and she may soon lose her parents farm. How can a marriage work in the midst of such a trying situation? I loved Jesse and Megan. They are intelligent, unspoiled, and carrying people. Jesse surprised himself when he offered to marry Megan. He had no intention of doing so. How did this fit with the calling God had placed on his life? Megan saw herself as overweight and unattractive. How could a strong and handsome man ever find contentment being married to her? The story moves along nicely. It's interesting from beginning to end. There is a bit of a mystery in this story with regards to the bank and people being forced off their lands. Will Jesse be able to figure out what is going on before he loses Megan's farm?

About the Author

He lives in London and has taught at Imperial College and Goldsmiths College, and is currently Professor of Poetry at Sheffield Hallam University.

Les galeries marchandes à Paris fleurissant, on créa en 1884, le Salon des Indépendants. Cette exposition sans jury fut organisée pour ceux qui étaient ou se considéraient professionnels - alors très nombreux -, mais qui ne pouvaient satisfaire les critères des salons officiels. C’est lors d’un des Salons des Indépendants qu’ Henri Rousseau créa la surprise. Rousseau occupait un poste à l’octroi de Paris, à Vanves. A ses moments libres, il peignait des toiles, tantôt sur la commande de ses voisins, tantôt en guise de paiement pour de la nourriture. Chaque année, de 1886 à sa mort en 1901, il exposa ses toiles au Salon des Indépendants. Là, il se présentait sans savoir-faire professionnel, mais avec le fier sentiment d’être peintre et d’avoir le droit de rivaliser avec n’importe quelle autorité. Rousseau est un des premiers de sa génération à s’être rendu compte de l’arrivée d’une nouvelle époque de liberté dans l’art, y compris celle de pouvoir accéder au rang de peintre, et ce, indépendamment de la manière de peindre et du niveau de formation artistique.
Les œuvres du Douanier Rousseau aidèrent d’autres peintres, peut-être moins talentueux mais tout aussi originaux, à être remarqués et appréciés d’un public qui apprit à voir l’art d’une façon nouvelle. Avec lui, apparaît toute une série de découvertes. Désormais, qu’elles soient naïves ou primitives, les œuvres d’art étaient partout et il y aurait toujours un regard d’artiste pour les révéler.
